Carve your Own Path!
Carve your own path
Ten years ago, I left a comfortable life in Europe.
Friends thought I was crazy. South Africans were emigrating to the West, not the other way around. But something kept pulling me home.
I came back to start Matomani. A business built on mopani protein.
If you don’t know mopani, here’s what you need to understand: People call them “worms.” They wrinkle their noses. But those are just opinions.
The facts? Mopani caterpillars are one of the most sustainable, nutrient-dense protein sources on the planet. And harvesting them has supported livelihoods in Limpopo for generations. I wanted to take that further. To turn a traditional practice into an engine of dignity and pride for the communities that know it best.
We launched a range of endurance bars for environmentally conscious athletes. An industry where few people shared my background or my story. But that never shook me. I wasn’t there to fit in. I was there to build something meaningful.
I could have stayed in Europe. Stayed in a corporate job. Instead, I chose to carve my own path. And on that path, I found something unexpected: peace. Not the peace of fitting in. Not the peace of approval. The peace of creating my own story and doing exactly what I was meant to do.
This mindset is imprinted into every Matomani bar. It’s the quiet confidence of carving your own direction, even when the crowd is going the opposite way.
We are not for everyone. We are here for those who have ever walked away from the herd, who dared to leave the known and carve their own path.
Wendy, founder of Matomani
