I remember the soft rustle of mopane leaves underfoot, the gentle hum of the Limpopo bushveld, and the laughter of my grandmother and aunts as their skilled hands moved deftly through the branches. For us, harvesting “masonja” was not a chore; it was a ritual. A time of storytelling, of connection, and of securing a precious source of nutrition that had sustained our people for generations.

I also remember the first time I saw that tradition through the eyes of the outside world. The wrinkled noses. The whispered word, “worms.” The perception of something primitive from those who couldn’t see its worth.

That gap between the deep value I knew and the dismissive perception I saw is where Matomani was born. The idea of taking something native, something deeply traditional, and innovating to make it relevant for today’s global challenges and consumers. We call it being Innonative.

Our ancestors understood that these creatures, that  fed only on wild mopane leaves, were good for their health. They knew how to harvest them sustainably, ensuring the cycle of life continued. That deep, respectful knowledge is our foundation. It is our “native”.

Our “innovation” is how we bring this gift to you. We took this whole-food ingredient and, using gentle, low-impact methods, created protein bars and powders that rivals any modern superfood with complete protein, rich in energy-boosting iron and immunity-supporting zinc.

Africa is phenomenally rich. For centuries, our richest resources cacao, coffee, diamonds, minerals have been taken from our soil in their raw, crude form.
